Information

In late 2008 Mace Plus was awarded the contract to construct the new Globe Academy in Southwark, a commission from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCFS) and Absolute Return for Kids (ARK).

Mace Plus were selected for this complex and challenging project for their depth of knowledge and experience in the construction sector. The project itself began with a large enabling works project that involved the removal of approximately 11,000 bodies from a Victorian graveyard situated within the footprint of the new building.

The new Globe Academy is being constructed around the existing school; with the implicit interface issues constantly high on our list of priorities. The project is heavily phased, in that a section of work is complete which then releases more buildings for demolition and consequently more construction. Further to this is the refurbishment of the adjacent Victorian Joseph Lancaster Primary School and the 1950s built Grade II-listed Pentagon building. The first two phases have achieved a handover on time or ahead of programme.

The main academy building, the 3 storey teaching block, consists of a new school including teaching and staff areas with state of the art IT facilities, kitchen and canteen, toilet core and circulation areas, landscaping and MUGA areas as well as a new gymnasium. The refurbished Pentagon building houses the arts, DT labs and drama and dance studios. The already completed Foundation Stage Centre is an architecturally stimulating, single storey nursery building.
