Mace Plus spent a day at Garth Hill College when they were invited to provide a presentation and interactive exercise on the various roles of construction in aid of the college's technical enterprise week.
Construction and commercial managers on the project, Harish Raghwani and Ryan King, went back to school for the day to give 220 14-15 year old students an insight into the construction industry. Following a presentation about the Mace Group, pupils were split into project teams of ten tasked with designing, sketching, quantifying and programming their own lego towers to maximise team profit. The profit was measured against three variables: height, time to build and number of lego pieces used, whilst details of each team's project proposal were captured within a contract document. The teams were allotted half an hour to submit the document to client Ryan and Harish Developments Ltd and penalties were given for any inaccuracies within the contract document and late completion of the tower.
Pupils were awarded book voucher prizes to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams, where the highest amount of profit was generated on the towers. The most profit gained was £77,000, for a fast-built but short tower.
Meanwhile, Harish and Ryan were delighted to act as project ambassadors and one of the first gateways to the world of construction for students at the college. Ryan said: "There were some exceptionally talented students participating in the activity. Each team brought something innovative to the table."
Mace Plus then donated ten sets of lego at the end of the days' activities, to help the college's technology department deliver its syllabus for the 2009-10 academic year. In addition to this, the project team intend to run further careers talks and activities during the winter term, to support its client Bracknell Forest Borough Council.
