New Southampton Police Station for Hampshire Constabulary
Mace Group is delivering a new purpose-built new police station in Southampton, which delivers an efficient and effective working environment through forward-thinking design. The new station will also represent a positive architectural contribution to the city, helping to promote an approachable and friendly image for the Police Force.
Located on the outskirts of Southampton city centre on an existing brown-field site, the new Southampton Operations Command Unit (OCU) is a £38m ‘develop and construct' project. The project was procured using the SECE (now IESE) Major Framework and involved the early engagement of a contractor and its novated design team in the project process, working collaboratively with Hampshire Constabulary and the client team. The principle aim of the new building is to provide a facility for Hampshire Constabulary that will not only provide a landmark building in terms of its appearance but also the associated professionalism of the service which it will create when operational.
The building amalgamates facilities provided by several satellite Police Stations in Southampton area into one custom built facility. A new custodial suite is to be built in addition to the office space and infrastructure for various police departments. Mace are providing full project management service for Hampshire Constabulary, managing the develop and construct contractor and its novated design team through the design, planning and construction phases of the project. In addition the Mace team will oversee all client-direct operations; such as enabling works, engagement with utility companies etc. Mace Group is also providing cost management via its dedicated subsidiary Sense Limited. And in another joined-up part of the commission, Mace Sustain is providing the CDM coordination services.
Client comments
"The introduction of Mace to Hampshire Constabulary, via the IESE framework, is proving to be a great benefit to us on the Southampton OCU project. [Mace's] integrated approach of working with us to understand the way we work is allowing them to challenge us on what we need. Mace is using this knowledge to assist our journey to provide a landmark building that will be the base for community Policing in Southampton for the next 60 years.
This project is taking us beyond our normal day to day operation. The innovation, flexibility and reliability demonstrated by the Project Management guidance, Cost Consultancy support and CDM services has provided us with the confidence they are acting in our best interests. We have developed an excellent working relationship."
