Information
Following our successful delivery of the stunning Venetian casino resort in Macau, Mace was once again called upon to help the Sands Corporation as it expands across Asia. Mace was appointed to provide project and construction management consultancy services on this mixed use development and as such play an integral part in the client's management organisation in delivering this massive development, including many of the most responsible and influential positions in the project and construction management delivery teams.
The Marina Bay Sands integrated resort project is a holiday and gambling scheme on a massive scale. The ambitious multi-tower design will be located on reclaimed land and feature a modern lifestyle blend of retail, gaming, museums and hotels - topped by a two acre sky garden. This is luxury with a futuristic edge, and very much in keeping with the Sands Corporation's other worldwide gaming resorts.
In mid-2006 Mace mobilised a senior team to assist the Venetian Group with the necessary preconstruction services required to establish the project. We developed an overall strategic programme alongside package and logistics management strategies. The Las Vegas Sands Corporation established its own project management services company and seconded experienced personnel from a number of internationally respected companies. Mace currently has 18 project and construction managers who are playing a pivotal role in delivering this iconic project. Completion is scheduled for the end of 2009.
Marina Bay Sands is set to become a premier entertainment destination with its vibrant diversity of attraction and facilities. The vision is to build an integrated development that is timeless, a landmark that possesses a distinct identity which will distinguish Singapore from other cities. Located along the Marina Bay waterfront, the 20ha Integrated Marina Bay Sands Resort seamlessly combines business and leisure into a singular destination unlike any other and features:
- Three curving hotel towers with 3000 rooms topped by a sky park 200m in the air spanning all three hotels, while projecting 60m at one end. Trees and garden plants will landscape the space along swimming pool and a series of bars and restaurants. A public viewing platform will give views to neighbouring Malaysia and to surrounding Indonesian islands.
- 'Floating' crystal pavilions
- A lotus-inspired Art and Science Museum
- Luxury retail, restaurants , theatres and nightclubs
- A Las Vegas-style casino.
- The largest ballroom in Asia
- For business visitors the scheme also includes extensive meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibition (MICE) facilities featuring state-of-the-art technology, highly flexible exhibition halls, and a convention centre that can host over 45,000 delegates.
- Four rail tunnels at approx 450m long connecting the Singapore Down Town and Circle Line's to a new MRT station that has been designed and located specifically to serve this development.
On site, construction is already under way. The project's foundations have had to be massive as the project sits on a reclaimed area of Singapore's Marina Bay, which means building on marine clay. The team has had to get through the clay to make room for the underground car-parks and railway tunnels which sit beneath the facility. Bored piles which go down to over 50m with large bored piles up to 2.8m in diameter have been necessary, typical of many Singapore construction projects.
Another major challenge for the team was the erection of the hotel frames. These have sloping shapes that do not meet and mutually support each other until they are over 20 storeys high. Contractors had to use struts and temporary post-tensioning to keep the towers in place as they rose into place.
The Lotus shaped "ArtScience" museum sits at the front of the development. The building's shaped steel frame was the most difficult part of all the structural design. However, using software scripting it was possible to analyse this one petal at a time, altering the parameters for each subsequent part.
