The Mace Group’s £19m Marks and Spencer refurbishment project saw an exclusive unveiling as iconic M&S model Twiggy and chief executive Stuart Rose opened the redesigned Pantheon store for trading at 9am, Wednesday 28th November. Managed by Mace Group in the role of client project manager and delivered by Mace Plus, the project involved a complete refit and refurbishment of the store.
After almost 70 years of trading in one of Oxford Street’s most landmark buildings, Marks and Spencer unveiled its redesigned Pantheon store. As part of the refurbishment, the exterior of the store was restored to its original stone façade of the 1700s and the 75,000 square foot interior has been completely redesigned.
The redesign is the latest milestone for a building with over 230 years of history. The Grade I listed M&S Pantheon store was originally built in 1770 to resemble a Roman temple and was intended as a venue for concerts, shows and balls. The site was purchased by M&S in 1937 and underwent a complete redesign before it opened to the public the following year. Architects Messrs, Lewis and Hickey, along with Robert Lutyens, were responsible for the remodel of the building which is constructed entirely of steel and concrete.
The latest redesign is part of M&S' strategy to modernise its entire chain. Also being managed by Mace Group, the re-model programme is now in its third phase and 70% of M&S stores are now refurbished. The store now boasts the company’s new signature style with contemporary interior design, brighter lighting, easy to navigate walkways and more spacious fitting rooms throughout.
