The British Museum has announced that Mace Group, the international consultancy and construction company, has won the competition to be appointed construction managers for the North West Development project.
The new development, by internationally-recognised architects, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is the first step in a 20 year masterplan intended to safeguard and enhance the museum's collections and will provide special temporary exhibition galleries and logistics facilities, improved storage and improved accommodation for staff and collections and consolidate existing conservation and scientific research operations into a new state-of-the-art facility. The consultation and design process for the development are ongoing; the planning application has not yet been submitted.
Zoe Hancock, the British Museum's director of projects and planning said: "We are very pleased at the prospect of working with Mace again. There is still some way to go in the design and planning process, but it is a complex project and a complex site, and Mace's early involvement in the project will be of great benefit to the museum."
Gareth Lewis, Mace group board director responsible for construction, said: "We are absolutely delighted to have been confirmed as the construction manager for The British Museum development. The museum's Great Court, which Mace project and construction managed in 2000, is one of our landmark projects for which the board and I are very proud. To be invited back to work for the museum on its next major construction project is an honour. This appointment is very special to us and we look forward to returning to the museum to play our part in making the North West Development a similar success."
