Mace reaches another milestone at Burnage Media Arts College

Mace completed and handed over the new build phase of the Burnage Media Arts College on time and on budget this July, followed quickly by the completion of the final refurbishment phase at the beginning of September in time for the new school term.
As part of the Building Schools for Future (BSF) programme, Mace has been working with the Manchester City Council to provide programme, project management as well as consultancy and construction services. Burnage Media Arts College is just one of the 33 successful and unaffected BSF programme sites in the Manchester, which together represent £509m worth of investment.
This success builds on the two previous refurbishment phases of the project which also finished on programme. The development is now due to be completed ahead of the contractual finish in February 2011. All that remains is the demolition of the old school, construction of a new sports hall extension and addition of new grass and all-weather pitches which will continue until the scheme completion early in the new year.
Ian Fenn, the college's head teacher was taken aback when showed round the completed school. He said: "I am delighted every time I think about our new building and more importantly the new opportunities that our children can now take advantage of".
He was especially moved when he saw that the school's old war memorial had been retained and reinstated. The memorial, which commemorates ex-pupils lost during the Second World War, was something the current pupils had listed as an item they wanted to keep from their old school.
Project manager James Quirk said: "It was a great team effort and I am personally very proud to have been a small part in delivering this great new school. We have a great team on site and we have built a good relationship with the school."
