Mace project team take part in the RSC Open Day

22/07/2009

Mace took an active part in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) annual open day on Sunday 19th July 2009. The project team working on the theatre transformation project showed over 3,000 visitors around the site effectively doubling the number that attended last year. Its popularity is perhaps not surprising, with the outer shell of the building almost completed the theatre is an impressive sight, Mace project manager Tim Court said: “ The visitors just kept coming; locals and tourists alike and the vast majority of the feedback was very positive with the most popular question being: “when is the first performance.”

Other activities on the day included talks and performances in which RSC staff and alumni discussed the various creative processes behind the staging of a play.

The organisers had put a special focus on introducing Shakespeare to younger visitors. Young people were invited to work with the RSC in a number of workshops in which they were able to put on their own play and learn about bringing theatrical fight scenes to life.

Mace is providing construction management services on the transformation project which centres on a new 1000 seat thrust stage auditorium. The stage will be the largest thrust stage with a tiered auditorium in the world but will bring the actors and audience even closer together with the furthest seat from the stage reduced from 27 metres to 15 metres. The project will also include a new tower which will allow visitors to a stunning view of Shakespeare’s birthplace.
