A Mace team working on Hillside Special School in Plymouth saw its efforts pay dividends with the achievement of a customer satisfaction rating of 100% from client Plymouth City Council.
Hillside School proved a unique and challenging project for Mace as it is the first new school building in the country to specifically address the requirements of special educational needs specific to behaviour. Whilst the site positioning, building layout, built form and appearance of the school seem simple, the design strategies, curriculum integration and functional flexibility are inherently sophisticated.
The elegant integrated design solution is a result of rigorous and intelligent employment of low energy passive design strategies which address the complex special educational and social requirements of the school. The building design focused on the health and safety of occupants and fitted the group's CR agenda by incorporating environmentally friendly aspects.
Mace undertook a full multi-disciplinary role that included design and engineering alongside the development of a comparative scheme which was then used in the tender documents to secure a guaranteed maximum price at stage one of a two-part JCT design and build contract. This proved to be most effective in controlling the second stage design development.
The Mace team attributes its success on the project to the excellent client relationships built. Close liaison with the school led to minimum changes being introduced during construction. A zero defects approach to completion has also led to the school being fully functional from day one.
Regional Mace Group director Simon Doyle said: "It is great to see the skills, experience and determination of this team being recognised by our client with this customer satisfaction score."
