Mace achieves practical completion on UCL project

18/06/2008
Mace Group has successfully achieved practical completion on a new engineering front building for client University College London (UCL). Mace provided full project management and administration services from inception to completion for this design and build scheme which was delivered to excellent quality, within time and on budget.
The new building combines the existing management studies centre and the centre for enterprise and management of innovation (CEMI) into a centralised facility. This multi-disciplined facility includes individual shared and open plan offices, meeting rooms, a tiered lecture theatre and seminar room and social break-out areas.
The new engineering front building is intended to act as a catalyst for promoting UCL's new department of management studies. The ground floor is an open space to be used as a UCL showcase area, providing an area for exhibitions, performances, demonstrations, social functions and circulation space. This area will also be used as an examination hall and catering area for conferences. The five storey building was constructed over the existing basement which contained engineering laboratories and plant rooms. The rear of the building is cut back to allow daylight into the existing Roberts Building. The front elevation is layered to provide solar shading to the southern aspect whilst creating a level of detail similar to that of the surrounding architecture.
The facility is due to be opened by Lord Salisbury in October.
