Envy of our peers
As principal contractor, Mace successfully delivered this key aviation infrastructure upgrade for client BAA Group in 2005.
Pier 6 is a new satellite building servicing 11 aircraft stands and linked to the north terminal by a 197m long passenger bridge which spans a live taxiway at a height of 22m, high enough to allow a Boeing 747 to pass beneath it. Pier 6 marked a critical stage in the growth of Gatwick Airport as the UK's second largest airport.
The 2,700 tonne pier connector was constructed at an off-site prefabrication facility to ensure minimum disruption to airport operations. It was manoeuvred into position from its build location 1.6km off site overnight in May 2004.
As part of the Gatwick Airport sustainable development programme, the project has reduced the number of bus journeys to and from the airfield and the pier connector allows passengers unparalleled views across the airport and its surrounds.
